From Winnipeg to Swift Current to Calgary the landscape changes incredibly...from forests to thin forest to flat plains to rolling grazing fields and then all of a sudden there they are...the Rockies... Amazing!!
We spent a night in Calgary at the Calgary West Campsite almost at the bottom of the bobsled run in Olympic Park We had a very nice visit with Pauline's cousin who fed us a lovely meal and sent us on our way with homemade bread and muffins. Thank you Sylvia and Myrna!!
The next day we made our way to Glacier National Park...our first National Park destination. We were not disappointed. Our campsite was right beside a glacier creek. We actually filled our water bottles and drank right from the creek. There are a number of hikes in Glacier Park and we started right away on our way to Glacier House. It was amazing (ok, I know I have used that word before...find another one for me...)
Did I mention it was worth it???
The second day we went off on another hike this time to Marion Lake. Let me at this point suggest to you that if a hike starts off with the description "unrelenting switchbacks" take heed of the word "unrelenting". The change in elevation was 425 meters in 2.2 km. Now in back to back to back field hockey pitches that might no seem like a lot. But put them end on end one end...it means something entirely different.
Did I mention it as worth it??

When we got to Marion Lake we couldn't go farther as there was too much snow to continue so we retreated...but you know going down is something harder than going up.
Just sayin'...
We are camped on the Thompson River in Kamloops tonight. As we were driving into Kamloops we noticed a number of wineries in the area and once we picked our campsite we headed off to the vineyards and picked up a umber of local wines. Sorry...I suspect there won't be many to share when we get back. But so far they are very good. Off to Tsawwassen tomorrow to take a ferry Friday morning for the island...from here to there and back to someplace next...
Photos are amazing!!
ReplyDeleteWow - what wonderful scenery!
ReplyDeleteThese photos are great - just getting back to catching up on your trip and glad you added the comment sections
ReplyDeleteI'm finally getting caught up! Great photos and stories, love it.
ReplyDeleteAw, cowtown! I've spent many, many hours of my life at Canada Olympic Park skiing, ski patrolling, and biking. And excavating sites along the slope further west from there that is now all housing. Fun times. Don't think I've ever been to the campground though, so there you go.
Nurse Jen says: please stop drinking glacier water... Beaver Fever is a thing and not a fun thing (though the name sounds like it should be, like a lesbian fundraiser party or something). But really, cryptosporidium and giardiasis google them and then buy a camping water filter.
Friend Jen says thanks for the shout out on the Soo post a few posts back (https://media0.giphy.com/media/26gskRA7w2OfYy26Q/200_s.gif
you'll have to cut and paste the link, this is a no GIF zone). Glad you like the doc and glad the 2on/2off schedule isn't as gruelling as the Pacific!
Ok! I'm off to read the rest, safe travels friends! xo
